I know this is going to hit people differently. But losing Dolly yesterday hurt. Like physically hurt. I knew about her growing up as a young queer kid. And even though I wasn’t out, I knew what she meant about being true to yourself truly meant. At least to me. And later, she was defending drag queens before RuPaul was actually a thing. Like someone asked her a long while back if she wishes she’d been born a man. She said if she’d been born a man that she’d be a sissy. And that she would also probably be a drag queen.

I was reminded of the story about Dolly being in Los Angeles and entering a Dolly Parton lookalike contest, competing against a bunch of drag queens. SHE LOST. And yet, she took it in stride, and smiled when she would tell the story.

And today. Fuck. We lost Tim Curry. “Oh, that actor in a wheelchair,” my straight coworker said.

Fuck that.

Tim Curry made ’The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ what it was - an amazing gift to the queer community. I mean a movie made more than 50 years ago may not mean much to some people. But I guarantee the queer kids that saw it at 16, 17, 18 like I did, it made a massive difference in their lives. While the movie was made fun of, it was probably (for many of us) the first time queerness was up on the big screen. Yes, there were other queer movies.

But nothing will beat The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Ever.

Not going to lie, this week is super hard, emotionally. Fuck.

edit: Video of Dolly telling the lookalike contest story is here: https://www.tiktok.com/@ellendegeneres/video/7444302449806069038

I've posted before (but I'm too lazy to find said posts) about my "Cameron" moments. Akin to the scene in 'Ferris Beuller's Day Off', it's the scene where Ferris Cameron, and (sorry - don't remember the girlfriend's name!) are in a museum in Chicago, and Cameron goes to see the painting 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La grane Jatte' (link goes to Wikipedia with said image). When I have really connected to a piece of art, I will OBSESS over it for the next few days. If it's a fic, I'll re-read it. If it's a song, I'll put it on repeat until I'm sick of it.

I bring music up because, while I've really connected to one fic recently (a The Pitt Hucklerobby fic where Robby adopts baby Jane Doe), there have been two pieces of music that I've connected to. Ironically, both are because of watching Drag Race France.

Two of the last lip-sync battles have had music that for whatever reason I feel deeply. Even though one is in French, I know enough to understand the meanings to connect to the story behind the words. Ironically, both could probably be described as having storytelling as part of their lyrics.

The first was Violà by Barbara Pravi. While it is in French, you can tell by the clear passion in the voice (which, the drag queens lipsynching to it did an AMAZING JOB!) it's about a person telling the world, "This is who I am, warts and all. It's the only thing I can be." I'm going to have to find the English lyrics, but it's worth a listen. And I sincerely wish I could find just a video of that lipsync; it was so well done, the emotions even more heightened from the performance that I didn't know the words and I was brought to tears. Second edit: It's in the first comment, but if the song moved you, you should watch this video which has the lyrics - which are even more heartbreaking than I thought! Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO57TxhlUsw

Second is Tattoo by Loreen - which I liked. We heard it in another lip synch on Drag Race: France, and I loved it. After a quick rewatch, I told Patrick that I loved the song, and could feel the lyrics on my skin, but I needed to hear that song done with passion. Passion is the one thing thatcan not be faked. But Patrick, who watches stuff I don't, had me search for that song, but by someone named Sheldon Riley.

It was like I was hit by a truck, the amount of passion this person conveys through every carefully nuanced movement, trill, lyric, and voice tremble. Watch for yourself. Link goes to the Youtube link because apparently he never released it as a single. I just downloaded it, trimmed the video to just the song, and converted it to MP3. And I've listened to it 100 times today already.

So what's something that you've connected with lately? I can't be the only person that like focuses like spotlight over something I've connected with for a week until the spell lifts.

edit: Tried to find a video of the DR:F lipsync of Violà, but couldn't. So added on a bit more about my experience in that section. And second edit on 8/24 with a link to the translation.

comments

I'm trying to post more often, but you know - ::waves hands at the state of the world:: - all that is going on.

Life's been pretty steady here. I managed to get wrangled into volunteering for our local Democratic Party to set up and work a table at the 2026 Boring and Dull Day (now with 100% more Bland!). Yes, I live pretty close to Boring, but because we're unincorporated where I live (long story) we can actually call ourselves Boring if we want and it's all good. Anyway, setup and worked the booth, lost my only pair of glasses, and was only cussed out once. But that was overshadowed by me meeting one of my heroes; a woman who runs our local Blackberry Alliance, which is the people who bring us the No Kings rallies. Meeting her was awesome!

Other than that, work is still weird. I proudly called myself a "grunt" on a call, because I love being on the front line of Pharmacy Informatics and digging through data, making processes better/smoother/etc. for nurses, physicians, and pharmacists. I didn't think about it at all, but my boss called me the next day to say she thinks "So much more of me than being a grunt" - which is nice. I tried to explain that it wasn't derogatory, but she didn't really care.

It sucks when you have to censor yourself in front of your boss (more than usual). Just goes to show that honestly, I'm almost ready to retire. I'm not even 60 yet, though I can see it coming up in less than 16 months. But I'm honestly hoping that things will swing my way and I get to retire early. By choice, mind you - I don't want to be 58+ and be told I'm out of a job. That would suck.

In all honesty, I'm just working for the health insurance at this point anyway.

Oh, and the good news, I didn't actually lose my glasses! I found them 3 days later, sitting on my bedside table. Thing was, as soon as I saw them, I remember saying out loud - to my husband right before we took a nap last Saturday - "I shouldn't leave my glasses here, because I'm going to instantly forget and will think that they're lost!"

I hate being right sometimes.

Anyway, back to Sunday chores, and then to join in with at least a few minutes spent with fen. YAY! Oh, and for those who have offered to beta my Brock Youngbottom book one, that's probably going to be coming to you pretty soon. ::knock wood::

comments

I used to be the only person in my department. And while I liked it, it was busy as hell. So then we hired a second person, and now a third. And I feel like things are falling apart.

We all work on our own projects, and that’s cool. But we also have a shared mailbox that is first-come first-served. Except now BOTH of my coworkers don’t care if someone (me) posts “I’ll take X from the mailbox”. They used to. But now I do my “I’ll take X” and then try to do my work when one of the other people locks the record I need, etc.

WHY?!?!

Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play? ::sigh::

Anyway, nothing biggie news-wise on my side of things. Life is life, and I’m just chugging along. I’m done with my first book (title = Brock Youngbottom: Bounty Hunter) of my latest trilogy; it’s about a bisexual himbo who literally tumbles into becoming a bounty hunter with a drag queen mentor. The writing style is unlike anything I’ve ever done, and I’m liking it. I’m 2 chapters into book 2 (title = Brock Youngbottom: Hit The Brocks) and have the whole thing mapped out. It’s just getting the words on the electronic page. We have had a few different errands that have taken my time away from writing for the last two weeks - but that should end as soon as we get our SUV back (it’s been in the shop for literally a month today!). I’m going to focus on getting the second book finished as soon as possible and then map out and write book 3 (title = Brock Youngbottom: Brock The Vote).

Yes, all titles after book 1 will have “Brock” instead of either “Brick” or “Block” or “Rock”. My friend Kim gave me like 10 possible book titles, and the nice thing is the imagery she painted with the titles mean I have no shortage of possible storylines. So at least that part is going well!

And I’m still looking for alpha-reader(s) if anyone wants to read a novella. These books will all be 40,000 to 50,000 words, but probably closer to 40,000 for these three books. Future books will probably conform to the 50,000 word minimum.

Wheeeee! Happy Wednesday, folks!

And this says more about me than it does about DW/LJ: I don’t think of DW/LJ as social media, because I can just be myself here.

Well hell - why can’t I be myself on “regular” social media? Isn’t that what social media is for? Well, normally, yeah. But it probably has to do with me being a gay dude - and trying to impress other gay dudes. Sure, I’m married. And besides that, I’M OLD! I’m 58; will be 59 in November. But there’s still that basal instinct of “Maybe if I impress him, he’ll want to…”.

::wavies:: I'm still out here!

I've been crazy busy, just like everyone else. I'm also trying not to use Social Media all that much, and am finally getting the hang of it (I just use my BSKY account mostly for reading the news, lately). Boo and I sat down and watched 'Project Hail Mary' last weekend, and it. Was. AMAZING. So much emotion packed into that story! I totally started the first 15 minutes just thinking, "Smart Ken In Space" but those thoughts left my head as the story went on.

Friday night we decided to watch The Martian, since we knew it was from the same author. It was good - just emotionally wearing. But I do still like Project Hail Mary more. I can't explain it - I know that with PHM there were 2 essential characters and in The Martian there was just Matt Damon's character, but for some reason my gut tells me that Ryan Gosling had the harder time acting opposite what's essentially a CGI puppet. Sure, they both showed off their acting skills in each movie, but Gosling "did more" - at least in my head.

It also gave me an idea for a Nursey/Dex story (there is an amazing fic, I can't remember which now, but it's Dex showing up in New York City to find Nursey, where Nursey gets Dex to watch The Martian for the first time. So now I want to write a story where Dex takes Nursey on an official date to go see Project Hail Mary.)

Anyway, other than that, life is good. Busy, but good.

I will throw in that I'm like 30% finished with my gay himbo bounty hunter book. My writing in it is a little different; besides doing like a chapter of data dump so you find out Brock's history, I've interspersed it throughout part of the story so far. I like how it's coming, but of course if I'm writing for me, i'm going to like it. There may be a time, probably come Fall when I finish the book, when I'm going to need some more eyes on it. If you're interested in learning how a 20 something himbo pan dude becomes a bounty hunter, and the drag queen that's helping him become one, let me know.

Yes, his name is Brock Youngbottom. He used to be a "top" (Brock Altentop) but changed it to Youngbottom. You'll find out in the story if you're interested.

Happy Sunday, folks!

comments

Well shit. I had a whole thing to post - and it's gone. ::sigh::

Basically, drive by post to say I'm still out here. Busy as usual, but I'm trying to make plans to be more efficient with my time including writing more. We'll see if things pan out! ::knock wood::

I've been bit by the Hucklerobby bug (The Pitt, Dennis Whitaker/Michael "Robby" Robinovich) so that's what I'm obsessing about right now.
I have to say, we have an embarrasment of riches when it comes to TV shows right now. Sure, there are some good movies (Sinners was AMAZING), but what have I been spending most of my time appreciating? The hour-long drama (3 shows) and comedy (1 show) that just seems to get better with every episode.

First off, comedy. I've loved David Mitchell ever since he guest starred on '8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown' (link goes to Youtube with full episodes - warning, they are spit-take hilarious at times!), and then on the UK version of 'Would I Lie To You.' Well color me surprised when Mitchell showed up in a new series called 'Ludwig' in 2024. I really loved it - it's got a great premise, and the comedy is just sublime. You wouldn't think a puzzle maker impersonating his twin brother who has disappeared amidst murder allegations would be funny, but it's got some of the best comedy writing out there!

Drama? I think by now everyone knows 'The Pitt'; we're mid season two right now, and everything about the series is amazing. But not only do we have that right now, but we have the third season of 'The Night Agent' and season two of 'Paradise' just dropped. I'm only caught up on The Pitt and Paradise, and with each episode I yell, scream, and cry with everything going on. Seriously, I had to STOP working this morning during parts of 'Paradise' it was that tense.

The Pitt is on HBO, The Night Agent is on Netflix, and Paradise is on Hulu. So much for having everything in one service! Anyway, if you get a chance, watch! I cannot recommend them more!

And now on to the SGA Picture part of the deal. So I wrote a quickie story for romancingmcshep about John Sheppard's ass (the fest goes until February 28th if you're interested!) and the whole story is based on a picture that NOBODY can find anymore. I KNOW! It's frustrating! Anyway, there's what I think is a "behind the scenes" shot of most likely S01E03 "Hide and Seek" or S01E05 "Suspicion" where it's focused on Joe Flanigan's butt. Like kinda blatantly. He's kneeling on the Gateroom floor over Rodney, I believe and you can see where his t-shirt is pulled up and the waistband of his BDUs are lower - showing some skin and some of his boxers. This is what I think the camera sees in that shot, as Sheppard is kneeling like that but I remember there being a whole lot more skin. Does anyone remember a BTS photo like this? SO FRUSTRATING that I can't find it when I know I've seen it a hundred times.

And with that, back to work!

comments

The flu shot didn't guess the correct strain, and so the strain caught on and has only gotten worse. Mask up if you have to be around people (ewww, people. gross!) or do what you need to protect yourself.

In other news, nothing much has changed here. We watched 'Sinners' and I have to say - it's worth all the hype. Work continues to be challenging, but still fun, so that's good. And Patrick remains retired, and constantly underfoot. I'm gonna get some writing done one of these days! I need to write a shortie fic for RomancingMcShep - and/or RomancingSGA if Parrish/Lorne yell louder than McShep. And I have the full chapter-by-chapter breakdown of my next book, so I've got to get to writing. I've decided I'm going to publish it on my 60th birthday.
Well hello there! And welcome to another edition of, "Walter has a few minutes to breathe, so why not post an update?"

Good things:
Work has been pretty busy, and we've had some horrible days with technology failing us and such - but I got through them. I still love my job, even if there are the occasional putz-type people that insist on bugging me throughout the day. Yay.

But in much better news, my friend (that people who've been to the Stargate Conventions in Chicago back in the day might know) vecturist flew into Portland and we were able to catch up. It's like we don't get to see each other but every 5-10 years, but that's cool. We shared a wonderful meal in downtown Portland and caught up.

Stuff with Squidge is keeping me busy, like it normally does. But today I've got to get elderwitty and myself's taxes done for our joint venture (we're an LLC, and those have to produce tax documents by the end of January. Great!). While we haven't produced anything in a while, I'm actually about to undertake at least a trilogy of new books this year. All 3 books are rough-sketched, and the first book is about 50% done for chapter-by-chapter development. What's holding me back? There's a fake-dating/fake-marriage fest in the whatif_au community that's calling my name! That, and we've got romancingmcshep right around the corner; I'm going to try and write for both.

Not so good things:
My motivation is CRAP. UGH. The desire to produce new stories, new worlds, etc. is there. But the ability to put the work in to get it done? Meh at best.

Husband suggested that we watch Stargate: Universe together, because he only saw a few episodes, and while I'd never seen it, I'd made a little promise to actor Davie Blue back when he showed up at a Stargate Chicago con that I would watch it. And I mean we did - all of it - and I honestly couldn't find any redeeming qualities for it. Sure, there were some interesting stories, but they never wrote any of the characters to be likeable - everyone and everything was dark and angsty and filled with hate/rage.

Now we're watching Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and I will say that it's interesting. Not my favorite, but not the "end of the world, gloom and doom" that some people are calling it. Honestly, I don't think I would ever play in the Star Trek or Star Wars fandom communities, because unlike Stargate and some other fandoms, Star Trek and Star Wars has supporters that take things just a wee bit too far. What I've seen on Bluesky (I'm walterh503 if anyone is interested) is that if you don't fit in the specific mold of what people consider to be "good Trek" or "Good Star Wars" umbrella, you're toast. I've seen people go so far as to urge people not to watch it. I'm not gonna do that. I'm not a gatekeeper, and I'm certainly not going to let a fandom gatekeeper tell me what to do.

You can like it or you can hate it - and I respect that. But don't tell others what to do based on your own Trek or Wars "purity" contest. Just don't.

Okay, enough rambling. I'm off to do taxes. Yay. ::sigh::

comments

There's an old saying of something like, "You can't please all the people all the time" - and oof, I feel that one today. Drama over on AO3 has bled its way over onto SquidgeWorld, and no attempt to balance user's right vs anti-everything people will ever result in anything except drama.

I've gotten my first "Go kill yourself" comment in a while. I'm surprised I haven't gotten, "Hey, look over at this Tumblr post where I call you an asshole!" hasn't started up yet. But the day is still young.

In other, less dramatic, news, I'm here! Last Sunday at this time I was in full panic because I had sudden dizzy spells (vertigo) that caused me to puke for three days, then left me with double vision. I went to the hospital and they were all "OMG YOU HAD A STROKE!" and put me on the stroke protocol for my entire 20 hour visit. And even though my CT scans and MRI came out compeltely clean, the neurologist insisted that I had a stroke. Physical Therapy came by and was going to do something called the Epley maneuver in case it was the crystals in my ear - but said that since it was "a stroke" etc., that I wasn't a good candidate for the maneuver.

I got discharged and came home, still with double vision. Rested the weekend, and went to work Monday like normal, but I had to have an eye patch to be able to work. After I got curious about the Epley maneuver, I decided to web search it, and found a video of how to perform it on yourself. So after work I went into the living room and tried it...and my double-vision went away.

I've done the maneuver a couple of times, and things seem to be getting better and better. I still have a small amount of dizziness, but it's decreasing the more time goes on. I'll probably Epley myself once or twice more, just to get everything settled.

So it's been a weird-ass last couple of weeks for me. But I'm glad things are getting back to normal - for relative values of normal.

Happy weekend!

comments

Me? A Star Trek fan?

I was always a casual fan of Star Trek. TOS was good, and my sister being a massive fan basically introduced me to fandom culture. Then TNG came out when I was young and I enjoyed it. I watched Voyager and some DS9 and such, but nothing ever gripped me much.

Then came Star Trek: Lower Decks - and it had humor that I just loved. And midway through their run, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds started, and then there was the amazing crossover between the two shows. It did it with such ease that I could not help but love it. And I'd finally found in Star Trek what love for fandom I've had for Stargate Atlantis and very few other bits of media.

If you're not watching Strange New Worlds, I honestly thing you should. In this third season we had Episode 4 called "Space Adventure Hour" - in which people from The Enterprise basically told the story (without using specifics) about Desilu studios, and how a red-headed comedienne saves a low-budget Science Fiction television show in the early days of television. The casual person may not know this, but Lucille Ball is honestly almost solely responsible for saving Star Trek: TOS. I watched this episode with wonder; it's rare that you see something that's a love-letter to fandom.

And love-letters to fandom are sacred with me. Truly. I've tried my own love-letters to fandom, For due South, I wrote "Twenty Years Hence." For SGA, I wrote "What Could Have Been, What Might Become." And for Check, Please! I wrote "blink." This last story was special to me, because i wrote my love-letter to fandom around something that a person wrote about on Reddit (go read this, if you read nothing else); essentially it's living a lifetime, with all the wonder and memories and love in the blink of an eye.

Then there was this week's SNW finale. And I can say, without spoiling it, that elements of the Reddit story and my fic "blink" touch on. When I realized what was going on, I started bawling my eyes out. It was so, so well done.

I never really thought I would be a Star Trek fan - but the season finale of SNW solidified that for me this week.

That said, there have been some crazy things said about how SNW has "ruined" Star Trek - from the Lower Decks crossover to the musical episode to criticizing them writing characters being temporarily turned Vulcan. One person even said SNW is "an abomination."

You know what? Fuck that. Sorry - people are entitled to their own opinions, and that's fine. But I've found myself in a warm embrace of a show, and I'll never understand the people who try and drive a cold spike between the show and the viewers that love it.

Anyway, watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds if you haven't. It's a wonder.

comments

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who spoke out about keeping my LiveJournal/what you've done with your LJ. The vast majority of people say to keep it, and I think that's what I'm going to do. I normally don't like to be a part of something when shit goes down (like seriously - I left Twitter after Musk did his bullshit, and I left TikTok when the US government said they were going to shut it down for privacy purposes). Not that there's anything going to go down, but you know what I mean.

I'll just leave my LJ out there for the time being.

If you're so inclined, I posted a "What should I do?" question to the CommunityActionUSA group. I still want to keep it, but I've been bad at finding the time to update once/twice/three times a week with issues to write elected officials about. So if you've got an opinion on that, I'd love to hear it. I left the post over here.

Happy Wednesday!

comments

I know LiveJournal is pretty much dead; I mean they moved all their servers back to Russia, and because of who they are and who owns them (Rambler Group), they're subject to sanctions - so you can't give LJ any money for your account without worldwide governments coming down on you.

So what are people doing with their LJ accounts? Are you just leaving it out there abandoned? Or have you deleted it? I know there are a couple of SGA communities that are truly only on LJ because they were never popular enough post Dreamwidth migration to move to DW, and there's the CommentFic community, but to me that's it. And when I think too much about LJ, my first thought is to just delete it. I still might, but I thought I'd see what others are doing.

comments

Yep, another random update from me.

As I sit here, I can't hear out of my left ear because I have an inner ear infection. How do I know it's an inner ear infection? Because not only can I not hear, but my balance is shot to hell as well. Yeah. It's not fun sitting up in bed and then almost falling out of it because your head is swimming around, leaving you unable to do anything but wait for the world to stop spinning.

I have some leftover antibiotic ear drops, so I started using them today. We'll see how it goes overnight, or if I'm going to have to get my doctor to call in a prescription. Yay.

I finally figured out what I wanted to do with my CommunityActionUSA community here on DW - and it's to be an extension of Project Mailstorm. Project Mailstorm is something where you can send letters on the protest idea of your choice to members of Congress as well as the Orange Menace himself, plus his cabinet. The key for Project Mailstorm is to overwhelm TPTB with paper. Emails and voicemails can be deleted and/or ignored, especially if you have a MAGA Senator or Congressperson. But letters? No, they can gum up the works and being things to a crawl.

So I kind of reoganized the community and put my first "Call to Action" out. If you want to take part - that would be awesome. And if you could get the word out about the community so others can find it, that would be amazing as well.

And now it's time to go lay down.

comments
